The
Western Hills Plaza at Glenway and Werk Road opened in 1955.
The Western Hills Plaza Kiddieland was developed by Lunken
Field operator Carmen Caruso at same time. Rides included
a hand car ride, a Ferris wheel, swing ride and a boat ride.
Each ride cost seven cents per ride. During that summer,
Channel 9’s Uncle Al and Princess Twinkle appeared.
In
1956, Caruso touted the ad, “Let Us Baby Sit for You
While You Shop.” Cost was 40 cents for six tickets
and the park operated from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
A
carousel and train ride was added for 1957 and shoppers
could ride the “Plaza Go Round” tram for five
cents to travel throughout the shopping center.
In
1958, Caruso advertised “To make Kiddies Happy Is
Our Business” and added the Rolling Jeep ride and
Sky Fighters to the ride line-up. On June 5, Billy the Circus
Clown made an appearance.
In
April 1960, Caruso changed the name of the park to Plaza
Playland. The cost was increased to ten cents per ride.
In
August 1961 and again in 1963, Channel 9’s Uncle Al
made another appearance.
The
Plaza Playland operated through the 1960s.
